Halfway through October, Edmonton has yet to see any snow. But with the weather being unpredictable this time of the year, when is the best time to switch over to your winter tires?
“I generally suggest trying to get it done obviously ahead of the curve, not waiting until it snows so you’re stuck waiting for weeks, or 8 hours sitting at a tire shop,” said Robert Carey, Co-Owner of Tire Shop Plus.
According to projections later in the month, temperatures are expected to dip quite quickly meaning you will need your winter tires sooner rather than later.
“ Sometimes it doesn’t take much to slide into somebody and have a small accident,” said Carey.
If you don’t own winter tires yet, there are different kinds out there. One of the unique ones is the “walnut tire”. The rubber is infused with shells from the tree nut and this tire shop says it’s one of the tier 1 tires out there.
“Toyo Tire has advertised for over 10 years that they use micro amounts of walnuts in their Toyo Tires. I’ve used Toyo Tires myself lots through the years, not just for that reason, they’re a good tire, good product, good value. But there are people that will bring that up and they’ll ask the same thing.”
Winter tires can be pricey. According to this tire shop prices haven’t changed much from previous years. If you want to avoid the expense, experts say – take a look at your driving habits.
“I think it depends on you and your driving conditions. So potentially people will be asked ‘what do you do? Do you go to the mountains, Jasper twice a month? Do you go to Banff? Do you drive the Henday?’ Then maybe you need a set of dedicated winters,” said Carey.
