ASIRT concludes investigation into deaths of Const. Ryan and Const. Jordan

Alberta’s police watchdog has concluded its investigation into the events around the deaths of Const. Brett Ryan and Const. Travis Jordan earlier this year.

On March 16, Const. Ryan and Jordan responded to a wellness check at an apartment building near 114 Avenue and 132 Street.

“Upon arrival, the two patrol members went inside the building, approached the suite, and were shot by a male subject,” Edmonton Police Service Chief Dale McFee said in a press conference following the shooting.

Edmonton police say the teenager who shot and killed two officers, was previously known to police, though he was never charged with a crime.

Police say a struggle then ensued between the mother and the son over the gun. During the struggle, the teen shot the mother, before shooting himself.

Following the shooting, the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) was directed to perform a review of the EPS investigation into the circumstances that led to the deaths and injury.

ASIRT confirmed its role as to be an independent review of the EPS investigation and was to focus only on the “use of force and whether any actions of the police officers led to the harm to the civilians.”

The police watchdogs says during the review, investigators looked at witness statements from both civilians and officers; physical evidence from the scene; autopsy reports; police radio transmissions; and the firearms of both officers and the civilian.

The review found the officers were clearly lawfully placed in responding to a call for assistance from a member of the public.

Adding both Const. Brett Ryan and Const. Travis Jordan, did not engage in any use of force, nor did they engage in any action whatsoever that contributed to the harm suffered by the civilians.
