With thanksgiving around the corner, Canadians are choosing to spend less over the holidays. As Adam Ziccarelli reports, there are ways to host a successful dinner, without compromising nutrition.

The reality of inflation likely looming over Canadian’s Thanksgiving plans, but will you be changing the menu to manage rising food costs?

According to a report out of Dalhousie University, more Canadians are shopping at discount stores to get their food. In fact, 60 per cent of Canadians are shopping at discount stores, with Alberta topping the list in two categories, prioritizing costs, and concerns over compromising nutrition.

“Three in five Canadians are actually compromising nutrition when they actually buy food so they are prioritizing cost over nutrition,” said Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, a professor at Dalhousie University.

Millennials are having a tougher time putting food on their table then their parents. According to the report, younger demographics put cost above nutrition, and this is due to higher prices at grocery stores and a higher cost of living across the nation.

“They’re not earning as much as the people in the generation X or Boomers. And so, it’s not surprising to see Millennials are really impacted by what’s going on at the grocery store right now, much more so then other generations,” explained Dr. Charlebois.

However, if you are planning on hosting thanksgiving and you are on a budget, a nutritionist says you don’t need to compromise on health.

“Frozen fruits and vegetables come with similar nutrition content. With canned we really just need to watch for added sugar for fruits and added salt for canned vegetables,” said Matthew Adeguyi, a certified nutritionist at Revive Wellness.

When it comes to the traditional turkey, you can substitute it. A larger chicken or even pieces of chickens such as the leg are more then healthy substitutes for anyone looking for a good meal on a budget.

“We can look at something like chicken. It’s smaller and has a lower price. And to delve further into that, we can also look at something like chicken legs or different pieces so you’re not buying the full bird, and we’re spending less money,” explained Adeguyi.
