New reception centre for wildfire evacuees in Edmonton

By News Staff

Following the lifting of Yellowknife’s wildfire evacuation order last week, Edmonton is re-locating its emergency reception centre.

The reception centre at the Edmonton Expo Centre is moving to the Clareview Community Recreation Centre as of Monday at 9 a.m.

Service hours will be 9 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“With the evacuation order lifted for Yellowknife, fewer displaced individuals remain in Edmonton and there has been a reduced demand for services,” the city said in a news release.

The Clareview recreation centre will provide services to Lower Slave evacuees.

Access to city-owned recreation facilities, amenities and transit for evacuees will continue to be available. Overnight lodging will not be provided.

Animal Care and Control will not be available; pet supplies can be picked up at the centre.

Roughly 7,500 evacuees from the Northwest Territories have registered in Edmonton since Aug. 8.
