Young Edmonton students had the opportunity to hop on the school bus for the first time in preparation for the school year.

Edmonton students from Kindergarten and up took part in the city’s 15th annual First Riders event on Tuesday.

The event is put on by the city every year to allow new students in Pre-Kindergarten, Kindergarten, or new bus riders the opportunity to learn about school bus safety.

It also features an introduction to Edmonton Transit Service (ETS) buses for students in Grade 7 or higher who will be making the transition.

During the event, students practice loading onto a bus, watch a safety video, and learn basic safety tips.

“They learn lots of things about riding a bus. Where to stand, how to get on, how to get off, the area around the bus where the drivers view is restricted, and for many they do end the session with riding the bus for the first time,” said Geoff Holmes, Manager of Student Transportation, Edmonton Public Schools.

“We certainly know for parents as well as for students, taking the bus for the first time can be a little bit overwhelming so this is a fun event that is designed to try to build confidence for students and their families before the first day of school.”

In Edmonton Public Schools, over 14,000 students ride a school bus every day, and about another 14,000 ride public transit.
