The Edmonton evacuation centre for residents of the Northwest Territories escaping wildfires was closed for registration Friday night.
The Edmonton EXPO Centre can no longer welcome new evacuees due to limited hotel capacity in the city.
The City of Edmonton says it has welcomed more than 6,000 evacuees since Aug. 18 – more than double the number originally planned for.

The centre will continue to provide food, clothing and rest for evacuees who are currently registered, or evacuees passing through to an alternate reception centre.
The City of Red Deer evacuation centre also reached capacity. A list of open evacuation centres can be found here.
