1 dead after plane crashes in lake east of Edmonton: RCMP

Alberta RCMP say one person was killed and another was seriously injured after a plane crashed into Beaverhill Lake, east of Edmonton, Friday night.

Tofield RCMP say they were called by the Department of National Defence around 9:10 p.m. to find a missing plane believed to have crashed into Beaverhill Lake.

It was located Saturday just after midnight, about 200 metres away from shore in the northwest portion of the lake, police say.

The injured person was removed from the cockpit and airlifted by STARS to an Edmonton hospital.

Tofield RCMP, Beaver County Fire and Rescue, Edmonton Police Service Air Services and Search and Rescue Canada assisted in the search.

The cause of the crash is being investigated by the Canadian Transportation Accident Investigation and Safety Board (CTAISB) and the Transportation Safety Board (TSB).

Beaverhill Lake is about 95 kilometres east of Edmonton.
