Groat Road closed Aug. 10-14 for Stony Plain Road Bridge work

Groat Road from 107 Avenue to River Valley Road will be closing as of Aug. 10 at 7 p.m.

The City of Edmonton says the closure, which will last until Aug. 14 at 6 a.m., will be to install girders on the new Stony Plain Road Bridge.

In addition, the shared-use path will be closed from Aug. 8 until Aug. 19 due to the construction.

Drivers, cyclists and pedestrians are asked to find alternate routes.

Available detours include Victoria Park Road, 149 Street to Whitemud Drive and 109 Street to High Level Bridge.

The City also notes that replacement of the Stony Plain Road Bridge is required for the Valley Line West LRT project.

“We are still on track for that fall 2024 completion, but we are working as fast as we can to get this bridge open as soon as we can,” saud Brad Baumle, the construction manager of Marigold.

Marigold Construction is responsible for the Valley Line West. A different company than the one still working on the delayed south east line to Mill Woods.

“We have taken a lot of lessons learned, with the City of Edmonton to try and keep this project rolling. There were definitely concerns there.”

Baumle says they have also learned lessons from the last time a bridge was constructed over Groat Road. In 2015 when girders at 102 Ave. buckled, delaying the project.

This is the second year of construction on the $2.7 billion line. With no exact timelines on when trains will run between Downtown and Lewis Farms.
