Edmonton Corn Maze apologizes for RCMP design

Organizers of the Edmonton Corn Maze are apologizing for this year’s corn maze design while also underscoring their continued support for the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and law enforcement.

The popular attraction southwest of Edmonton was met with some backlash this week after it unveiled the maze’s latest design: a tribute to the RCMP. It coincided with the national police force’s 150th anniversary.

Over the years the corn maze has featured a variety of themes, from the Edmonton Food Bank to the Stollery Children’s Hospital.

On Friday the Edmonton Corn Maze apologized for its choice of theme this year.

“We understand that the RCMP has caused hurt and distress to various communities, including Indigenous Peoples and people of colour, and for that, we sincerely regret any pain our design may have triggered,” the group wrote on its Facebook page.

“We acknowledge that such a portrayal may be perceived as insensitive and dismissive of these valid issues. We are sorry.

“Moving forward, we commit to being more thoughtful in our design decisions, ensuring that they resonate positively with all members of our community.”

That response was met with its own mixed reaction from commenters online. The apology was taken down as of Sunday.

CityNews reached out to the Edmonton Corn Maze organizers Sunday morning regarding the removal of the post.

“What was missing from that response was our support for the men and women who are serving and have served in the RCMP and law enforcement in general,” organizers wrote in an emailed statement. “We in no way wanted to diminish or devalue the good work that they do. The maze design recognizes this 150-year milestone. We thank them for their service.

“We have always tried to be a place where people from all walks of life could come out to the country and spend some time getting lost with their friends, family, neighbors and community.”

The Edmonton Corn Maze is open until Oct. 22.
