Friends and family should be celebrating Treasa Oberly’s birthday Wednesday. Instead, they’re mourning her death, and struggling to make sense of her homicide.
“She will never have justice, justice will never be served. Her life is gone, how can you justify that?” Zina Hinkley, Treasa’s friend.
Oberly from Beaumont, Alberta was reported missing on July 16th. RCMP and Search and Rescue conducted a ground search.
Her body was found the following week. RCMP major crimes unit is still investigating, but Wednesday charging Treasa’s 43-year-old boyfriend, Kenneth Skelly, with second degree murder.
“I just hope we can spread awareness when it comes to domestic abuse,” said Hinkley.
Hinkley is helping Treasa’s family — who are all in the U.S. — navigate next steps. A GoFundMe has been set up cover some of the costs, as they look to re-unite Treasa’s 3-year-old son with his grandparents in Delaware.
But for those who knew Treasa, they want her to be remembered as a wonderful person who was always helping others out.
“I always called her my Mother Theresa, because she would do absolutely anything for me. She had a heart of gold, and people like that don’t deserve an ending like this,” said Hinkley.
Skelly remains in police custody until his next court appearance set for August 3, in Leduc.
