86-year-old woman killed in 3-vehicle collision in northeast Edmonton: police

The 86-year-old passenger of an SUV involved in a three-vehicle collision over the weekend died in hospital, according to police.

The Edmonton Police Service says the collision happened in the city’s northeast Sunday around 3:10 p.m. – at 153 Avenue and 66 Street.

Police say a 41-year-old woman in a 2007 Toyota Matrix was driving west on 153 Avenue approaching the intersection of 66 Street.

A 2015 Toyota Rav4 operated by a 47-year-old woman with the 86-year-old woman as a passenger was travelling south on 66 Street, police say.

“A collision occurred between these two vehicles, and the impact of the collision caused the Matrix to collide with a third vehicle that was stationary in the turn lane facing east on 153 Avenue,” EPS said in a news release.

Police said all injuries were initially considered minor, and EMS were called for “precautionary reasons.”

“While checking on the passenger of the Rav4, the 86-year-old female’s condition suddenly deteriorated. She was subsequently transported to hospital where sadly she passed away,” police said.

The EPS major collision investigative section is investigating. Police are trying to determine if a vehicle travelled through a red light.

Speed and impairment are not considered factors.
