Homicide detectives are investigating the suspicious death of a man in northeast Edmonton Sunday evening. Laura Krause has the details.

Edmonton police say a man was killed near the Belvedere LRT Station Sunday night.

The EPS says officers responded to a weapons complaint at the LRT station around 9:15 p.m.

When police arrived, they found a man dead with what appeared to be suspicious injuries.

Police did not elaborate on why the death is considered suspicious. They say it appears the victim and his killer did not know each other.

“Such incidents create the perception of the lack of safety, which may not necessarily have its full weight in reality,” said Temitope Oriola, professor of criminology at the University of Alberta.

Just last week, EPS released data that shows an upswing in gun violence with a 133 per cent increase this past June compared to 2022. And while it’s unclear what sort of weapon was used in this death, this criminologist says the trend of violence is concerning, but doesn’t want Edmontonians perception of crime to interfere with the true picture of crime in our city.

“These are rare incidents, and Edmonton remains at its core as a fundamentally safe and secure city. Canada by far remains one of the safest countries in the world. That is a fact,” said Oriola.

An autopsy has been scheduled for Wednesday, to confirm the cause of death. Investigators are asking anyone who has any video footage from the area, or anyone who was driving near the station between 8:45 p.m. and 9:15 p.m., to contact them at 780-423-4567.
