Special air quality statement issued for Edmonton due to wildfires

A special air quality statement has been issued for Edmonton as smoke from wildfires continues to drift to the city.

According to Environment Canada, the smoke is “causing poor air quality and reduced visibility.”

The city’s air quality index was ranked as “high risk,” as of Sunday afternoon.

Environment Canada warns to reduce smoke exposure as much as possible and to stay indoors.

“Stop outdoor activities and contact your health care provider if you or someone in your care experiences shortness of breath, wheezing (including asthma attacks), severe cough, dizziness or chest pains. Stay inside if you are feeling unwell and experiencing symptoms,” the statement reads.

It adds to keep doors and windows closed and to use a HEPA filter in rooms that you spend a lot of time in.

“Take a break from the smoke by temporarily relocating or finding a location in your community with clean, cool air such as a library, shopping mall or community centre,” the release adds.

For those heading outside, it recommends wearing a respirator mask.

Environment Canada adds that people should check on loved ones, and notes that people who are most at risk include those with heart disease, older adults, children, and pregnant individuals.
