Dead birds found at Alberta Suncor-operated properties

Dead birds have been found at two separate Suncor-operated oilsands tailings ponds in northern Alberta, according to the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER).

On Saturday, it reports 27 dead waterfowl were found at the Syncrude Mildred Lake settling basin, and five other dead birds were found in a tailings pond at the Suncor Base Plant.

Among the birds were a dozen grebes, which are listed as a “sensitive bird species” in Alberta.

All the birds were found between May 8 and May 13.

This comes as the AER last month reported 32 waterfowl dead at Suncor’s tailings pond on its base mine site.

It has notified the provincial and federal governments as it continues to assess the situation.
