Edmonton firefighters battle early morning blaze at adult store

Not much is left after an early morning blaze in Edmonton’s West End.
A neighbour to the building says he woke up to the smell of smoke.
“It was kind of rough, so I went out back. I couldn’t even see the road because of the smoke,” explained Shawn Kelly, who lives next to where the fire occurred. “I went back onto the roof and there were already a bunch of firefighters there.
Kelly is waiting to see how much damage is done to his apartment as fire crews continue their investigation into what caused this early Friday-morning fire at an adult video store on Stony Plain Road and 156th Street.
“I’m not sure. I’m going to assume that there’s probably smoke damage in there,” said Kelly. “Most likely some water damage. Hopefully it’s not too bad.”
Edmonton Fire Rescue says they got the call just before 5:30 a.m., on Friday.
At one point, 40 firefighters were on scene to battle the blaze. Officials add there were no injuries.
“They found heavy smoke coming out of the rear of the building’s main entry. Could not get any farther, it was too compartmentalized. The heat pushed them back at that time,” explained Paul Brooks, District Fire Chief.
An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire.
