An Edmonton woman plucked the heartstrings of the judges on the season premiere of Canada’s Got Talent on CityTV, Tuesday. Beatrice Love is originally from Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation on Treaty 8 Territory, and now lives in Edmonton.

She grew up singing and says her father, a long-time musician, is to thank for her passion for music.

Following her cover of Who’s Lovin’ by the Jackson 5, one of the judges, Howie Mandel said “What I was sensing in your singing and in your performance is an authenticity. You weren’t just singing, you were emoting more than that. It seems like you’ve had more of a journey than you’ve let us in on.”

In response, Love said “We’ve all got a story.”

In her introduction to Canada’s Got Talent, Love said “Growing up Indigenous in this country, it sets you on a trajectory to a specific way of living, and at the end of that, I was a homeless drug addict.”

Telling CityNews, she said “It was just barrier after barrier after barrier that eventually ended in complete destruction for myself. I was 30 when I got on the clean and sober path, and sobriety has been in partnership with healing, growing up Indigenous, so it’s been this hand-in-hand partnership of healing and recovery.”

It was her passion for music that helped her rebuild her life, and years of performing that helped her get onto the big stage.

“I feel like because music is a universal language, that is what’s resonating with people right now, and it’s wonderful to represent my Indigenous roots,” she says. “All of the stages I got to sing on over the past 5 years has prepared me for this moment right now.”

Love got a ‘yes’ from all four judges during her audition for Canada’s Got Talent, but she won’t know if she makes it onto the next round until auditions wrap up. “At the end of the day, win or lose, I feel like I had already won. I have had this opportunity which is more than I could ever ask for,” Love says.

Canada’s Got Talent airs each Tuesday on CityTV.
