Edmonton activates extreme weather response until March 12

By News Staff

The City of Edmonton activated its extreme weather response to help its vulnerable population.

The city’s cold weather plan includes three bus routes that will run from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. every night to transport people to shelters with capacity.

The Bissell Centre and Boyle Street Community Centre extended their daytime hours of operation, and wellness checks are being conducted at encampments.

Edmonton Public Library locations will be open for warming purposes during regular operating hours. LRT stations will not be open as part of the extreme weather response.

The extreme weather response is activated when temperatures are expected to be colder than minus-20 Celsius with wind chill for at least three consecutive nights.

It also takes into consideration shelter capacity and occupancy rates.

The response is expected to last until March 12 at 6 a.m.
