Jason Kenney hired as senior advisor for business law firm

Former Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has a new gig as a senior advisor at Bennet Jones, a Canadian business law firm.

The law firm announced Kenney’s new title Wednesday, saying he will be based in its Calgary office.

“He brings an extraordinary combination of leadership and public policy experience to the firm and our clients,” said Hugh MacKinnon, chairman and chief executive officer of Bennett Jones. “Jason will be a member of Bennett Jones’ Public Policy group and make this unsurpassed team even stronger.”

It says Kenney’s experience can bring them “vision” to jump on opportunities in the energy sector, attract investment, and strengthen partnerships with Indigenous communities.

“As Premier, he led the creation of Alberta’s Recovery Plan, Natural Gas Vision and Strategy, Hydrogen Roadmap and the first-of-its-kind Alberta Indigenous Opportunities Corporation,” the company’s statement reads.

Kenney says Bennet Jones has “deep Alberta roots and national presence,” which make him excited for the new role.

“Bennett Jones’ Public Policy group has the greatest policy depth of any Canadian law firm, and I look forward to working with several former colleagues from both senior elected and public service roles,” the former premier said in a statement.

Kenney was elected to Canada’s House of Commons in 1997 for Calgary Southeast.

He served as a federal minister in different ministries between 2007 and 2015, including Canada’s Ministry of Immigration and Multiculturalism, Citizenship, Employment and Social Development, and National Defense. He also served as Chair of the Cabinet Operations Committee.

He announced last May he was stepping down as premier following a 51 per cent vote of support in a United Conservative Party leadership review.
