University of Alberta renews Enterprise Square in downtown Edmonton

Those in Edmonton’s downtown are hoping the University of Alberta’s expansion into Enterprise Square will bring more people to the area.

The University of Alberta says it is breathing new life into an iconic building in the middle of downtown Edmonton.

The school announced Tuesday that another 500 people will work in the renewed Enterprise Square building on Jasper Avenue and 103rd Street.

The square is located in the former Hudson’s Bay building, four blocks away from river valley, which will allow those attending the square easier access to trails and bike paths within Edmonton.

“The pedways at lunchtime are super busy again, and you have to make a reservation at your favourite lunch place — those kinds of things are back,” said Puneeta McBryan with Downtown Business Association.

“It will still take some time for the general public perception of downtown to change — because a lot of people are basing it on the last time they were here two months ago.”

Officials say it will reignite the space and contribute to the downtown’s vibrancy and vitality.

The square will be a place for research, learning and partnership.

Most of the staff will be those who work in external relations, human resources, continuing education and research services.

New upgrades to the square have created new support areas for university staff and students.
