There was a rally in Edmonton Sunday afternoon to show solidarity with Palestine, after the flag was banned from flying in public in Israel.

Earlier this month, Israel’s national security minister, Itamar Ben Gvir, banned Palestine’s flag from being flown in any public place.

On Sunday, a rally in downtown Edmonton saw the black, red, white, and green flag flying high, as pro-Palestinian supporters marched along Jasper Avenue in support of what the community is calling an attack on justice and human rights.

“In this country, in Canada, we have a democracy so people can raise whatever flag they want,” said Mousa Qasqas with the Canada Palestine Cultural Association. “In Israel, it’s not a democracy, as much as they say they are. Children are being detained and held without charge, without trial, administrative detention happens on a daily basis.

“This has been one of the deadliest years for Palestinians in the West Bank since the occupation of Gaza in the West Bank. So the situation’s only getting worse, and we’re just here to tell Canadians, if you’re peace loving and you’re for human rights, and you’re for the rights of Indigenous People, the people of the Indigenous land, then you need to be here to support the Palestinian people.”

Approximately 100 pro-Palestinian supporters participated in Sunday’s march.

The Canada Palestine Cultural Association says it hopes the rally will bring awareness to the ongoing conflict between Israel and Palestine. They say the flag, to them, is a symbol of resistance.
