Edmonton marks 3rd anniversary of Flight PS752 downing

By News Staff and The Canadian Press

Grieving relatives and supporters marked three years since the Iranian military shot down Flight PS752 with a rally in Edmonton.

The “Justice Prevails” commemoration ceremony began at the CCIS North Lecture Theatres on the University of Alberta campus on Sunday afternoon.

The rally then moved to a vigil at a memorial site also on campus.

There were also rallies in 11 other major Canadian cities and in more than two dozen countries around the globe.

The rallies marked the anniversary of the downed flight, which killed 176 people including 55 Canadian citizens and 30 permanent residents.

The Ukraine International Airlines jetliner was bound for Canada via Ukraine and shot down shortly after its takeoff from Tehran in January 2020.

The Edmonton ceremony included speeches and performances.

“Iranian Heritage Society of Edmonton and the Iranian Student Association of the University of Alberta, in collaboration with the PS752Justice association in Canada, invite everyone to attend the third memorial of downing flight PS752 and honour all lives lost by the brutal theocratic regime in Iran,” organizers wrote.

Several senior federal cabinet ministers will attend the private 2 p.m. ceremony in Toronto, which will include remarks from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

On Dec. 28, Canada joined peer countries in starting the process to send the Flight PS752 case to the International Court of Justice and attempt to force Iran to compensate victims’ families.

Advocates argue the move should have come sooner and the RCMP should have launched a criminal investigation while Ottawa was negotiating with Tehran.

Trudeau met with grieving family members on Friday and said Ottawa would be relentless in fighting for truth, justice and accountability.
