Lauren Hunter from SONiC 102.9 hopes to crack Edmontonians up with Halloween costume

An Edmonton radio host is at it again with her handcrafted Halloween costumes. As Laura Krause reports, she hopes her costume will 'crack' people up.

A radio announcer from CityNews’ sister station SONiC 102.9 in Edmonton is at it again with her handcrafted Halloween costumes.

Lauren Hunter says it has become a tradition for her to create a Halloween costume each October, based on the top news stories of the year. This year, Hunter dressed up as a cracked LRT pier.

“This one had a little bit of a tongue and cheek factor to it. I mean, nobody likes the time and money spent on the concrete piers, but I thought it was something Edmontonians could have a laugh at, laugh through our pain,” she says.

Edmonton’s southeast Valley Line LRT was slated to be up and running in 2020, but that was postponed multiple times due to the pandemic and complications along the way. The most recent setback is caused by cracks found in concrete piers, which hold up the elevated LRT track.

“Yes it’s frustrating for Edmontonians that the LRT is not yet done, but I thought this was something we could all get a laugh at,” she says.

Unlike the LRT, she was able to finish the project on time. “I got it done on time, Whereas the LRT, who knows when those actual piers will be done, so who knows,” says Hunter.

In past years, Hunter dressed up at Lysol Wipes in 2020, and most recently, the Ever Given, the ship that got stuck in the Suez Canal.

Hunter says she spent about 40 hours working on the costume, which was made out of a refrigerator box. She says she does it for her listeners on SONiC 102.9. “It’s always the listener’s reaction that makes it. I wouldn’t spend 40 hours of my own time just to make this for myself, I really do, do it for the SONiC listeners.”
