Edmonton police charge two more in connection to ‘grandparent scam’

Edmonton police have charged two more people in connection to the “Grandparent Scam.”

Officers warn that the scam targets seniors, as a person phones them and pretends to be their grandchild. During the call, the scammer usually tells the senior that their grandchild is in police custody and is in need of money.

The senior is then told to withdraw money from the bank and that a person will show up at their residence to collect it.

EPS say on Sept. 27, a 73-year-old woman was reportedly contacted and asked for money in this exact manner. The following day, she said she was contacted again by the suspect, allegedly asking for more money.
