Edmonton’s Truth and Reconciliation Day events

Edmonton along with the rest of Canada is marking the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation or Orange Shirt Day.

Those around the city will be able to attend a few events throughout the day.

Kicking off the day was a pipe ceremony at the Boyle Street Plaza. This event, put on by Calling on Spirit Back also features a Courageous Conversation, which began at 9 a.m. and will have a feast and round dance at 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. respectively.

Over at Kinsmen Park from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Root for Trees will be giving away 1,500 native species of trees, shrubs and wildflowers as a way “to honour the victims, families, friends, and inter-generational survivors of Residential Schools.”

At Mary Burlie Park, the YMCA will be hosting a Standing Together #OrangeShirtDay Walk.

The event will begin at noon and go until 1:30 p.m. and will provide an “inclusive space to raise awareness of the ongoing effects of residential schooling, build community capacity and healing supports, and provide opportunities for cultural understanding with the inclusion of cultural teachings and Elder supports,” said the City of Edmonton.

At Parkdale School, the Bent Arrow Traditional Healing Society will host an event focusing on the past, present and future of Indigenous People from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This event can be attended in person or online. More details can be found here.

Also at Kinsmen park, there will be an Orange Shirt Day Run/Walk.

This event will help raise funds for the Orange Shirt Day Society and local grassroots movements.

The 2.15km run and walk will take place between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. and event details can be found here.

Another Orange Shirt Day Walk will be taking place at 4 p.m. at the Wetaskiwin and District Heritage Museum. More details on this walk can be found here.

To end the day, Evolution Wonderlounge will be hosting Spirit of Giving.

The event will take place at 8 p.m. and will celebrate the strength, beauty, and resilience of Indigenous people. More details on this event can be found here.

Over at the Telus World of Science, a three day event will focuses on Indigenous perspectives with special guests and presentations. More on the events at the science centre can be found here.

In addition to all the events, the city will continue to fly flags at half-mast and the High Level Bridge will also be lit in orange.
