Cyclist killed in Edmonton LRT incident

An Edmonton cyclist is dead after an incident involving a train at the Clareview LRT Station.

According to the Edmonton Police Service, an unidentified male in his 40’s was on the platform at the station with his bicycle and as a southbound train pulled away, the train came into contact with the male causing injuries.

EMS did respond but the man passed away on scene.

EPS saying Tuesday, “this incident does not involve a criminal element and as such, the investigation rests with Edmonton Transit. Any further inquiries about this matter should be directed their way.

“Police have since determined that the deceased was a 40-year-old male, not a male in his 30s as initially stated. The news release has been updated to reflect this correction.”

CityNews spoke with Steve Bradshaw, the president and business agent of the Amalgamated Transit Union Local 569 regarding safety at LRT stations. Bradshaw say there’s a clear indication of technology available and adds the city needs to look into it.

“I’m going to use the example of the moving walkway in an airport. There’s a little voice or a buzzer or something at the end of it that says, well, you’re coming to the end. Can we not have something like that on the LRT cars so people aren’t getting close? A motion detector that sets off a voice or a warning or a buzzer or something like that? I’m sure there’s some kind of technology that can help with these, these kinds of problems.”

“People’s lives are at risk.”

The EPS Major Collision Investigations Section is now investigating alongside Edmonton Transit.

Anyone who may have information on this incident is asked to contact EPS or Crime Stoppers.
