A man is in police custody following an alleged assault on a bus driver Wednesday.
EPS says the incident occurred around 5:30 p.m. when the suspect entered an Edmonton transit bus at the Westmount Transit Centre and approached the driver.
Police say the man reached around the plastic partition — dividing the driver from the rest of the bus — with what looked like a gun and pointed it at the driver.
“A struggle ensued, while another passenger attempted to intervene. The bus driver was eventually able to gain control of the firearm, later confirmed to be a loaded flare gun that was spray-painted black,” said a spokesperson for Edmonton Police Services.
During the incident, officers say the bus drove onto the curb and hit an Edmonton transit building.
EPS arrested the suspect and then later transported him to hospital for assessment under the mental health act.
Police say the incident remains under investigation at this time.
