EPS, RCMP highlight importance of check stops as over 100 vehicles have been taken off roads

Over 100 commercial vehicles have been taken off the street after failing various safety compliance regulations, according to Edmonton police.

EPS says 110 vehicles failed to meet safety standards in the most recent three-day fall inspection event from Sep. 13 to 15.

During the event, 238 inspections were completed at various locations, meaning 46.2 per cent of commercial vehicles failed tests. EPS also noted of those, 551 violations were found and over $36,000 in fines were issued.

“This particular incident shows how difficult it can be to secure a large load and how dangerous it can become for the driver and surrounding motorists when a load is not secured properly,” said Const. Trevor Henderson with CVIU. “Regular commercial vehicle inspections help to prevent these situations and make the roads safer for all drivers.”

A couple of days later, at check stops in St. Albert, officers say another 40 charges were laid for various speed and impairment offences.

“One motorcycle was detected to be travelling at 142 km/h in a posted 60 km/h zone within an industrial area of St Albert. As a result, a 37-year-old male was charged with speeding and is set to appear in Provincial Court on Dec. 16, 2022 to answer to these charges,” RCMP said in a statement.

In addition, five drivers, including one novice driver, were charged for driving over the legal drinking limit. RCMP add that all are facing license suspensions and vehicle seizures.

“General overall compliance was seen to be favourable, however it is still concerning to see high-risk and hazardous behaviours on the road. Our teams will continue to do our part to ensure the safety of our roads for all motorists and we thank those who continue to make the right choices,” said Corporal Curtis Harsulla of the St Albert RCMP Traffic Services Unit in a statement.
