Video of the confrontation went viral Friday after it was shared by a member of the Edmonton Bear Clan Patrol.

In the 13-second video, the officer can be seen walking towards the woman, who has her back to him and is walking away.

As she turns to face him, the officer shoves her to the ground. He proceeds to grab her arms, while another officer runs towards them.

Edmonton police justified the use of force on Friday, saying the suspect was armed with a knife.

They added the officer used the least amount of force to subdue the suspect.

On Monday, EPS specified intoxication was a factor in the incident, and that officers declined to press charges.

But critics protested outside the downtown EPS headquarters on the weekend, saying they believed it was excessive force.
