Alberta Woman charged for gun trafficking

A 23-year-old woman from Devon, Alberta, has been charged following a four-month gun trafficking investigation.

In April 2022, the EPS Firearms Investigation Unit (FIU) began an investigation after police in Saskatoon traced a gun with a defaced serial number linked to a suspicious death in December back to the woman.

Not long after the investigation began, the woman reported to RCMP that her vehicle had been stolen along with the gun.

In July, the EPS Gang Suppression Team (GST) recovered another defaced gun in an unrelated investigation, and they say they were able to trace it back to the woman.

“Recovery of this firearm furthered investigator’s belief that she was operating as a ‘Straw Buyer’; a term used to describe someone who uses a legitimate PAL to purchase firearms legally and then traffic/sell them illegally,” said Edmonton police in a statement.

On Tuesday, with a warrant in hand, police searched the woman’s home in Devon, where they found evidence supporting the trafficking of guns.

The woman was charged with five counts of gun trafficking and another five counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking.
