Florida tourism officials say stark decline in Canadians visiting since winter

There are a few more days of the K-Days exhibition in Edmonton where you can ride roller coasters, try deep fried Oreo donuts and win prizes playing games – Sarah Chew finds out how you can stay cool while fair-hopping in the heat.

K-Days is still on in Edmonton— with all sorts of thrilling rides, enticing food and even music entertainment at night. So with a couple days left of the exhibition, what should you not miss?

“I like the swings and I also like the ferris wheel,” said a young boy, getting off a spinning swing.

Another K-Day-goer said she loves to eat “elephant ears. Classics.”

Her friend gave this advice for anyone checking out the rides: “Go on the busiest rides first, come early, and go on the ones that not a lot of people like later on.”

And a man enthusiastically said, “I love the mini donuts, the corn dogs and the rides.”

Mini donuts are indeed a fair staple – a vendor owner says people have been loving their latest creation, a deep fried Oreo mini donut with maple bacon.

“I mean everybody loves a donut, everybody loves Oreos, and you can’t get any more Canadian than maple and bacon,” said Jason Au, owner/operator of Tin Lizzy Concessions.

He says the pandemic dramatically hit their business that depends on fairs and festivals – but this year is a chance to recoup their losses.

“Realistically K Days hasn’t been around for two years because of the pandemic, and like I said, ‘Build it, open the gates, and they will come,’” said Au.

For K-Day goers who are wary of the hot temperatures during the day, there are snow guns that shoot out cool mist every 30 minutes, and you’re allowed to bring a reusable water bottle.

“We do have three water stations presented by Epcor – come in, fill up, we want them to stay hydrated – come prepared with sunscreen, your hats,” warned Amanda Frigon, the fair director of K-Days.

The Pope’s visit didn’t stop people from coming to the fair. Officials say it meant visitors just came later in the day.

The last day of K days is Sunday July 31st, so get out and have some fun while you can.
