After a four year hiatus, the Alberta Winter Games are set to return in February 2024 with Grand Prairie being designated as the official host.
The Alberta Winter Games are the province’s multi-sport event for youth ages 11 to 17 to compete in 18 different sports.
“We look forward with great enthusiasm to showcasing the north, and being part of this opportunity to support such significant events for sport and athleticism in the province,” said Jackie Clayton, mayor, City of Grande Prairie.
The goal of these competitive games is to provide a platform and opportunity for young athletes with the ability and the desire to further their athletic careers to the national scene and beyond, according to Alberta Winter Games.
The last time Grand Prairie hosted the winter games was in 1980 and the city also hosted the Alberta Summer Games in 2000 and 2018.
Alberta is investing $420,000 to support the games, which are expected to bring in nearly $3-million in economic benefits for Grand Prairie, according to a provincial release.
