    From road closure to transit delays, Edmonton is bracing for an could be the largest event in a generation when Pope Francis visits next week. Asking for patience for motorists, and to keep the focus on reconciliation.

    With various events happening around Edmonton taking place next week surrounding the Pope, Edmontonians will see many traffic delays.

    From July 23rd to July 26 the following roads will see closures:

    • 96 Street, from 108 Avenue to 108A Avenue, including the east sidewalk (July 23, 8 a.m. to July 26, 10 p.m.)
    • 108A Avenue, west of 96 Street to east of 96 Street to the alleyway (July 23, 8 a.m. to July 26, 10 p.m.)
    • Alleyways east of 96 Street and south of 108A Avenue to 108 Avenue (July 23, 8 a.m. to July 26, 10 p.m.)
    • QEII – between the Edmonton International Airport and the City of Edmonton (July 24 – until motorcade passes)
    • QEII & Highway 611 west of Highway 2A – between Edmonton and Maskwacis (morning of July 25 and the afternoon of July 25)
    • 96 Street, from 107A Avenue to 109 Avenue (July 25 from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. – residents will be able to leave the area, but will not be able to re-entre until roads reopen)
    • 108 Avenue, from 95 Street to 97 Street (July 25 from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. – residents will be able to leave the area, but will not be able to re-entre until roads reopen)
    • 108A Avenue, from 95 Street to 97 Street (July 25 from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. – residents will be able to leave the area, but will not be able to re-entre until roads reopen)
    • 109 Avenue, from 95 Street to 97 Street (July 25 from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. – residents will be able to leave the area, but will not be able to re-entre until roads reopen)
    • Highway 16, 43, 633 and connecting Range Roads and Township roads – between Edmonton and Lac Ste. Anne (afternoon/evening of July 26 – local traffic will still be permitted on Highway 633)
    • Stadium Road, from 92 Street to 112 Avenue (July 26 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
    • Muttart crossing, from Stadium Road to 106A Avenue (July 26 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
    • 107A Avenue eastbound lanes from 92 Street to 95 Street (July 26 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
    • QEII – between Edmonton and the Edmonton International Airport (July 27 – until motorcade passes)

     

    The following roads can expect delays:

    • Highway 2A – between Wetaskiwin, Maskwacis and Ponoka (July 25)
    • Highway 611 (July 25)
    • 112 Avenue and 111 Avenue from 82 Street to 97 Street (July 26 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
    • 95 Street and 97 Street from 103A Avenue to 118 Avenue (July 26 from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

    “Beginning tomorrow, Wednesday, July 20, and continuing through Saturday, July 23, the EPS and its partners with the Alberta RCMP and the Calgary Police Service will be conducting training in Edmonton and parts of rural Alberta. This training will involve police vehicles and motorcycles driving in formation and simulating the escort of a motorcade. Minor traffic delays are expected,” said Edmonton Police in a statement.

    “Drivers are reminded that activated emergency vehicles have the right of way over all other vehicles, so please safely signal and move to the right to make room for the emergency vehicles to pass. Stop and make sure all emergency vehicles have passed before you signal and merge back into traffic when it is safe to do so.”
