Bison causes traffic delay west of Edmonton

We’ve all seen road incidents during rush hour, but what about a bison raging across the highway? Laura Krause has more on a bison spotted crossing Highway 16 just west of Edmonton.

We’ve all seen road ragers during rush hour, but what about a bison raging across the highway?

It’s the last thing Keira Boutilier was expecting to see when driving eastbound on Highway 16 about 20 minutes west of Edmonton. “And then I see this big black bison just run across the road. At first I kind of thought it was a moose but then I had to do a quick double-take, and yeah, it was a bison. I was pretty confused.”

It happened around 5:30 p.m. on June 22nd. Boutilier says traffic slowed right down, allowing the bison to cross the highway.

“It didn’t seem like there was an accident, the bison just stormed across, like it looked pretty confused when it was running across like it had no idea where it was going. But it didn’t look like any vehicles were harmed or anything,” says Boutilier.

Like many Albertans, Boutilier says she watches out for moose and deer on the highway, but never thought to keep an eye out for the largest mammal in North America. “It’s just so weird like It was just one of those things you don’t expect.”

Alberta RCMP say they’ve received multiple calls shortly after 5 p.m. on June 22nd about a loose bison on highway 16 near highway 779.

Prior to attending, the bison had already been retrieved and properly secured by the owner. There were no accidents related to the loose animal.
