SE portion of Valley Line LRT to open during the summer

The new Valley Line Southeast LRT is nearing completion and should be carrying passengers this summer, according to TransEd. Laura Krause has more on what Edmontonians can expect when it's up and running.

The Valley Line Southeast LRT is on track to open this summer, says TransEd, but the exact date is not yet known.

“Our focus is to make sure we open this line when it is completely ready,” says TransEd spokesperson, Dallas Lindskoog.

The 13-kilometre-long line connecting Mill Woods to Edmonton’s downtown began construction in 2016 and was supposed to be completed in 2020. The opening of the line has been postponed multiple times due to the pandemic, and complications along the way.

Testing will continue at each intersection, starting in the southeast and working towards downtown, until signals are fully integrated.

“When complete, the Valley Line LRT will look and sound different from the Capital and Metro lines. There will be no crossing arms, gate or warning bells at intersections, this means vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists will have to learn how to share the road with the new train.

“As long as you follow the rules of the road and obey the traffic signals and obey the signage, you will be safe operating your vehicle alongside the trains,” says Lindskoog to media Wednesday morning.

“We want people to be very aware of their surroundings and making sure they are stopping at all the stop bars, and following all signs that point to the stop bars, and if you have a red light or a ‘don’t proceed as a pedestrian’ please obey that, that is for your safety and it is very important,” he continues.

More information on public safety around the Valley Line can be found at transedlrt.ca and the City of Edmonton website.
