Alberta Justice Minister Tyler Shandro will defend himself against allegations of unprofessional conduct in a disciplinary hearing before the Law Society of Alberta in October.
Shandro, who is a lawyer, is facing three accusations from when he was Alberta’s health minister, including an incident where he allegedly went to the home of Dr. Mukarram Zaidi and berated him and his family.
The alleged visit to Zaidi’s home was apparently over a meme posted online which criticized Shandro and his efforts to decrease funding for public health. Zaidi also suggested Shandro would benefit from supporting the privatization of Alberta’s health care system because of his family’s business interests.
According to the Law Society, Shandro is also alleged to have “used his position as Minister of Health to obtain personal cell phone numbers, [and] contacted one or more members of the public outside of regular working hours using that information.”
In the third allegation, Shandro “responded to an email from a member of the public addressed to his wife by threatening to refer that individual to the authorities if they did not address future correspondence to his office as Minister of Health.”
A spokesperson for Shandro previously said they look forward to resolving the issue through the proper channels, noting complaints like this can be made against any lawyer.
The Law Society of Alberta says Shandro could be subject to reprimand, suspension or disbarment. He could also face fines.
The three-day hearing will be held online beginning Oct. 17.
