Travel advisory issued as B.C. highway opens

An advisory is out for Albertans who may be hitting a major highway link between this province and British Columbia.

Highway 3 has reopened to essential traffic following the destructive floods and mudslides that struck B.C. last week, helping ease a significant backlog of commercial traffic that has cut supply lines.

Currently, Highway 3 is the only highway open from the Lower Mainland and there will likely be a large volume of traffic for the next while, with commercial carriers, in particular, filling up the road.

For the time being, Alberta is telling drivers to consider alternate routes instead of the highway, which is also known as the Crowsnest Pass at the B.C. and Alberta boundary.

If you do go on the road, expect regular delays as the commercial traffic increases in and out of B.C.

Certain routes through B.C. are only permitting essential traffic throughout that province as well, and Alberta drivers need to be aware of that before heading west.
