Lauren Hunter from SONiC 102.9 wins Halloween again with Suez Canal ship costume
Lauren Hunter is at it again. Winning Halloween, that is.
Year after year, the radio announcer from CityNews’ sister station SONiC 102.9 in Edmonton whips up a Halloween costume for the ages.
It’s become something of a time-hounoured tradition in Alberta’s capital, with social media delighting in the grandiose, outlandish, over-the-top (in a very good way) costume every October.

And this year was no different.
Always topical, Hunter dressed up in a massive six-foot long Suez Canal ship. Remember the one?

A container ship – the Ever Given – became stuck sideways in the side wall in a narrow stretch of Egypt’s Suez Canal in March. The skyscraper-size vessel was there for nearly a week before it was freed.
The blockage shook the global shipping industry when it halted billions of dollars a day in maritime commerce. It also captivated the world, drawing scrutiny and social media ridicule.
Now it’s Hunter’s turn to add to the ridicule.
The radio announcer donned a ship captain’s cap and wore the six-foot long replica of the Suez Canal ship. She called hers the “Everstuck.”
“Might be a bit late to the party this year,” she tweeted Wednesday night. “Got a little… stuck!!!”

Hunter says she spent more than 60 hours working on the costume. That included carving hundreds of small multi-coloured shipping containers to place atop the vessel.
The tiny excavator at the base of the “Everstuck” was the cherry on top.
Expectedly, her followers on social media loved the costume.
“Your creativity never ceases to amaze me!!,” read one reply. “Always so good!! You did not disappoint,” read another.
IT'S ALMOST THAT TIME!!!

It’s hardly the first time Hunter goes all out at Halloween.
Last year she was a massive wearable container of Lysol wipes – the perfect symbol for 2020.
She’s also gone as Edmonton’s iconic Walter Dale Bridge, the 66-storey Stantec Tower (under construction), cotton candy, and WWE wrestler Lacey Evans.
