Employee charged with embezzling more than $200K from Alberta charity

EDMONTON (CityNews) ─ An accountant has allegedly defrauded the Edmonton charity where she worked of more than $200,000.

Edmonton police have charged Brenda Rabie with theft and fraud for allegedly embezzling funds from the Alberta Foster and Kinship Association (AFKA).

Police say the 43-year-old Rabie e-transferred $209,000 to multiple personal accounts between November 2019 and October 2020.

According to Edmonton police, AFKA discovered Rabie’s activities when the employee did not show up for work when a financial audit was taking place at the charity.

AFKA is a non-profit organization that provides support to foster and kinship families in Alberta.

“AFKA has been fully cooperative throughout this investigation, and we truly feel for them, as that’s the last thing you ever want to discover about an employee,” Const. Shawn Joseph said in an EPS release.

“We suggest organizations segregate their accounting functions and use a system of checks and balances to ensure no one person has control over multiple significant parts of a financial transaction.”
