$10k in hay donated to Alberta SPCA stolen, organization says

ST. ALBERT – They aren’t looking for a needle in a haystack–they’re looking for the whole haystack.

The Alberta SPCA says around 70 bales headed to the organization were stolen near St. Albert earlier this month.

That much hay costs about $10,000.

The animal shelter says the hay was taken from a field while it was waiting to be transported.

“The hay was going to be used to feed livestock in the care of our organization this winter,” said Alberta SPCA Provincial Supervisor Stuart Dodds.

The hay, which was incorrectly cut and baled, was offered up to the shelter as a donation from Alberta Environment and Parks. But when an animal officer went out to check it out, the hay was gone.

“This would not have been an easy task,” added Dodds. “Collecting 70 bales would have required a bale picker as well as numerous loads on a flatbed semi-trailer.”

Anyone with information is asked to call police.
