Alberta RCMP expanding use of mental health response teams

EDMONTON – Alberta’s RCMP detachments are expanding their Regional Police and Crisis Teams (RPACT) in an effort to support Albertans in mental health crises.

The RPACTs are comprised of a Mountie and a mental health therapist and together the duo will respond to mental health calls.

The RCMP says the two worlds are paired together in small teams to ensure that an appropriate response is delivered while maintaining public safety.

Alberta RCMP has created a plan to expand those teams so they are available to all the province’s detachments over the next three years.

RPACTs are already used in Edmonton, Red Deer, Grande Prairie, and Airdrie, among other detachments.

Police say there were over 20,000 mental-health-related in Alberta last year.
