Lethbridge schools evacuated as high winds knock out electricity

LETHBRIDGE (660 NEWS) – Strong winds and power outages have forced many schools in Lethbridge to evacuate.

The Lethbridge School Division sent out a notice Wednesday morning saying all schools east of the Old Man River are closed as electricity was knocked out affecting a large portion of the city.

The division said it’s not sure when power will be restored and although a few schools haven’t been affected by the outage, they said evacuation makes sense given the unpredictable nature of the weather.

Lethbridge is one of several communities under a wind warning as gusts between 110 and 140 km/hr are possible.

Environment Canada said that winds have already reached 137 km/hr in Barnwell, a village west of Taber.
