EDMONTON (660 NEWS) – With the holidays fast approaching, many Albertans are wondering, is it possible to have a somewhat normal Christmas this year?
Premier Jason Kenney was asked this question during a Facebook live session on Wednesday.
He said if people follow the restrictions and don’t break the rules we could see a normal-ish Christmas, but likely not one that has dozens of people at your home.
“It is my desperate hope that we will be able to relax the rules on indoor social gatherings at Christmas time. But that’s up to all of us, it’s up to everyone.”
Will #Alberta see a "normal" Christmas this year? Premier @jkenney says it's possible, but people will need to scale it back. Likely no large celebrations, visitors probably not allowed. Earlier this week, Kenney announced a ban on all indoor social gatherings as active COVID-19 cases in Alberta hit the largest in the country.
He added you’ll be able to spend time within your household regardless, but in terms of visitors, we won’t know if those are okay until mid-December.
“If a lot of people just ignore this and the spike continues and the hospitalization numbers continue to pile up, then no, I regret we might not be able to do that. We’re going to take a look at the data around December 15 and then a little bit later to make a final decision.”
Kenney recommends you not make any big Christmas plans or gatherings this year and instead scale it back.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said if Canadians don’t take action now Christmas might be at risk.
“What we do in the coming days and weeks will determine what we get to do at Christmas.”

That message came on the same day that Canada’s Chief Health Officer Dr. Theresa Tam released figures that show the country could see over 10,000 cases a day by early December.
