‘Someday this will end’: Calgary dad, daughter release pandemic-inspired film

CALGARY (660 NEWS) — We’ve all been impacted by the pandemic differently.

For Calgary-based actor and producer Ryan Northcott, it spurred his creativity, writing a short film called Once Upon A Pandemic to tell the story of a 10-year-old girl and her father trying to cope during self-isolation, all inspired by his own situation.

“I look at my daughter, who is really the star of the film, and how resilient she was being in the face of so many unknowns,” he explained of Maddie, who stars alongside him in the short.

“I love her spirit and her attitude.”

It took Northcott just 30 minutes to pen the film because he says all he had to do was look around his own condo to see what was happening.

“It’s almost a blur,” he admitted. “When we look back at the beginning of this, it was ‘Oh my gosh, life is completely different now.’

“It hit home to me. I assumed that it would hit home to so many different parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and that sort of thing.”

Once Upon A Pandemic is an official selection of the 2020 Edmonton International and Oakville film festivals.
