Edmonton pauses face exemption card program amid criticism

EDMONTON (CITYNEWS) – The City of Edmonton has halted the distribution of face-covering exemption cards while it reassesses the program following widespread backlash

Beginning Aug. 8, residents who had a medical reason for not wearing a face covering were able to pick up an exemption card at one of seven facilities across Edmonton. That card was designed to alert others of a pre-existing condition and warn them to stay two metres away.

But critics alleged people who simply did not want to wear a mask – unrelated to medical conditions – were taking advantage of the cards.

The City of Edmonton put an end to the mask exemption program on Wednesday, at least temporarily, while it determines the next step.

More than 3,800 Edmontonians picked up an exemption card over the first four days. The city says residents with legitimate exemptions have been able to obtain a card up to this point.

“We appreciate the public’s understanding and patience as we make adjustments to how the City supports those with exemptions to the Temporary Mandatory Face Coverings bylaw, particularly those who are unable to place, use, or remove a face covering without assistance,” the city said in a statement.

A statement from the city, says putting an end to the program was a direct response to people taking advantage of the exemption cards.

“The development of the exemption card program was … based on trust,” the statement reads.

“Unfortunately, we have information that indicates some individuals who do not have legitimate exemptions have obtained a card.”
