EDMONTON – If you’re taking public transit or heading into a city-owned facility, you’ll now be required to wear a face mask.

City council voted Thursday to move to level two of the face mask decision-making model which makes masks mandatory, exempting only people with lung disease or breathing conditions and children aged two and under.
The city based its decision to move to the next phase of face mask rules mainly on feedback strongly in favour of making masks compulsory.

If someone refuses to wear a mask, the city says it will be taking an education-first approach and request compliance. However, if someone still refuses, transit operators and city staff can refuse service and ask the person to leave.
The new mandate, which isn’t a bylaw until the city moves to level three, comes into effect Aug. 1.
