World’s largest dinosaur getting a makeover

DRUMHELLER (660 NEWS) – The world’s largest dinosaur in Drumheller will be roaring back to life, figuratively of course.
The iconic, towering replica is a landmark in the town just east of Calgary but now it’s getting a much-needed renovation.
“When Canadians hear the name Drumheller, they instantly think of one thing: dinosaurs,” said Federal Minister of Economic Development, Melanie Joly. “Now, with the support of Western Economic Diversification Canada, this iconic Alberta attraction will undergo a scenic transformation so it can continue to amaze visitors from across Canada and around the world.”
The federal government will contribute $200,000 towards the refurbishment thanks to the Canadian Experience Fund.

The money will be used to give the dino a fresh coat of paint and necessary repairs, in time for the replica’s 20th anniversary.
The large T-rex is owned and operated by the Drumheller & District Chamber of Commerce (DDCC) and was last repaired and painted in September 2013.
Plans for the exterior repair and paint had been underway since last year.
“Each month, the DDCC allocates 25 per cent of admissions from the dinosaur to a Capital Repair Fund,” said President of the Chamber Jeff Hall. “As the WLD (world’s largest dinosaur) ages, the Chamber of Commerce will continue to be diligent about saving funds for future repairs and maintenance to the structure.”
The replica dinosaur was built in 2000 and attracts over 125,000 visitors a year.
