VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It’s the question ever kid wants answered on Christmas Eve: Where on earth is Santa Claus?
NORAD is helping people around the world with that query, by following the jolly man in red around the globe as he visits billions of homes to drop off presents.
For the 64th time, a wildly popular program that’s run by the Canadian and U.S. militaries is providing real-time updates on Ol’ Saint Nick’s whereabouts.
Track Santa on the NORAD website
Operation NORAD Tracks Santa had a simple start. In 1955, Air Force Col. Harry Shoup — the commander on duty one night at NORAD’s predecessor, the Continental Air Defence Command — fielded a call from a child who dialed a misprinted telephone number in a newspaper department store ad, thinking she was calling Santa.
A fast-thinking Shoup quickly assured his caller that he was. And a tradition was born.
