VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – It seems fewer Canadians now see religion as the reason for the holiday season, with more focusing on family gatherings, tree-trimming and hanging stockings.
An Angus Reid poll finds only one-in-10 Canadians see Christmas as a primarily religious celebration. That number is down from more than a quarter compared to 1988.
“The number of Canadians who will attend a religious service for Christmas this year is half of what it was in Angus Reid’s 1995 Christmas survey,” the survey reads.
According to the poll, the “real meaning” of Christmas has been lost for almost 70 per cent Canadians, which was the view for about 65 per cent of people 70 years ago.
“As time goes by, the nostalgia for a more ‘traditional’ Christmas is one thing that doesn’t change,” the report reads.
The pollster goes on to say adults have been documented to feel the holiday is filled with anxiety over excitement.
“For almost one-in-ten, this time of year is a source of dread.”
Angus Reid continues to find more than 80 per cent of Canadians prefer to call it “Christmas” rather than the “holiday season.”
