Were they naughty or nice? Christmas Cost Calculator may help you answer that question

VANCOUVER (NEWS 1130) – How much should you be spending on Christmas gifts for your friends and family this year? Well, a new tool may have an answer for you.

Finder Canada, a site meant to help users navigate through life’s “complex decisions,” has designed a Christmas Cost Corrector to help you dole out some “holly jolly justice” using a merit-based system.

Scott Burke from Finders Canada says you just enter your income, the number of people you’re shopping for, then you rank each and every one of them. The ranking can be either punitive or positive, just like Santa’s list.

The corrector quantifies how much you spend based on real-life data points that move the price up or down accordingly.

Some examples of the naughty-or-nice factors are, “they took your parking space, or is frequently late to social events. Some nice factors could be, gave you great life advice or is your emergency contact,” Burke says.

So far, the calculator has a few hundred users. This may be related to the number of people who plan to save a little bit more money this year.

According to a recent Finder survey, 76 per cent of Canadians have plans to spend less on Christmas presents this year.

The survey goes on to say the younger you are, the more likely you are to use “cost-cutting methods.”

About 88 per cent of Gen Zers are planning to save money on gifts this year compared to 84 per cent of Gen Yers, according to Finder statistics. Seventy-three per cent of Gen Xers and 68 per cent of Baby Boomers also plan on cutting back.
