Thieves more likely to break into cabins in October: RCMP

CALGARY (660 NEWS) – With the season quickly changing in Alberta, RCMP are asking you to be vigilant before leaving your cabin for the winter.
According to RCMP, October is the busiest month for cabin break and enters with 70 reported last year.
“October is usually the last time people will regularly go to those properties,” said media relations specialist with Albert RCMP Fraser Logan. “They’re essentially just closing up their cabins for the winter and winterizing it.”
How can you make sure your cabin is protected from thieves this winter? Logan said one of the biggest tips is to remove expensive items.
“If you have any watercraft or all-terrain vehicles, those should be secured and not left on the property. Those are magnets for thieves.”
Other tips include checking in on your property regularly and installing timed lights indoors and motion-sensor lights outside. Logan adds getting to know your neighbours is also important.
“Maybe you’re not around but maybe there are people that are out at an acreage or spend time year-round. If you’re not able to make it out there on a regular basis in the winter to clear the snow or just check on your property.
